Friends of Luro is a non for profit Australian, volunteer community group.
We work closely with remote rural communities in East Timor to create positive change.
We develop pilot projects and raise funds through community initiatives and volunteer at a grassroots level to ensure donations go directly to families and individuals in need.
Our projects are within the Lautem District (Luro Sub District) encompassing the communities of Baricafa, Afabubu, Wairoque, Cotamutu, Lacawa and Luro.
We volunteer with no religious or political agenda.
We believe that cultural tourism should be community lead, in partnership with philanthropic organisations.
The partnership should generate sustainable improvementfor local communities through the development of their own enterprises.
For Friends of Luro, cultural tourism is not merely tourism that benefits the Luro Sub District, but tourism where a part of the product is owned by the Community.
This means that not only do benefits (including income) flow directly to the community from our Tours, but the Community learns to make decisions and organise the tours.
The result….. A dignified and well balanced relationship between the Luro Sub District Community, FOL and You !

Every year we go trekking in the Lautem District of East Timor and we are hosted by the Luro community in their homes.
Our trips provide travellers with an opportunity to learn about the Timorese culture first hand, through simply being a guest !
Being hosted means that You have an opportunity to learn about the community through their eyes, their stories and their experiences.
Our trips are unique in that they are non for profit, but provide income for families and the community.
By simply joining us, YOU are making a difference !
