Friends of Luro is a non for profit Australian, volunteer community group. We work closely with remote rural communities in Timor Leste  to create positive change. We develop pilot projects and raise funds through community initiatives and volunteer at a grassroots level to ensure donations go directly to families and individuals in need. Our projects are within the Lautem District (Luro Sub District) encompassing the communities of Baricafa, Afabubu, Wairoque, Cotamutu, Lacawa and Luro. We volunteer with no religious or political agenda.

FOL wanted to address the issue of food security in response to the low yield of staple crops, the vulnerability of poor seasons, natural disasters, the lack of cash income to purchase food during the shortfall, post harvest losses and a reduced capacity to distribute to markets outside the Luro Sub District.

Drawing on the expertise of Timor’s Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF), FOL were able to fast track the ‘Seeds of Life’ program into Luro to provide the community with superior genetic quality seed for increased yield of staple crops, to minimize food shortfalls following vulnerable seasons and provide an opportunity to distribute outside the district market.

Recycled Wheelie Bins from Australia were also provided by FOL for grain storage and to minimize post harvest loss through vermin.

Learn & Grow Program

In 2011 FOL distributed copies of the Learn & Grow Program - Food Plants for Healthy Diets, in order to broaden community knowledge on plant varities and their nutritional benefits. The information outlined the practical ways of growing local food plants and doing it well.

Again in March 2014, more copies were circulated throughout the Sub District. Copies included CD's and production costs were funded by the Echuca/Moama Rotary Club of Australia.

'With a rich, diverse tropical climate, a variety of soils, altitudes, and rainfall patterns, it is time to discover and explore the amazing range of frequently over-looked tropical food plants that suit the locations, are rich in nutrients, and are adapted to this climate. It is time for Timor Leste to be proud of its own tropical foods. They are God’s gifts to the nation'.
