IIn August 2014, Friends of Luro in association with Timor Trekking Homestay ran a pilot sewing program in Luro, Timor Leste, in order to equip disadvantaged women in this remote mountainous region with vocational sewing skills. Trained and mentored by Australian women from Finley and Tocumwal in NSW who were participants on the Timor Trekking Homestay program, the afternoon of pattern instruction and sewing machine operations provided excellent cross cultural skills sharing.
We have now focused on developing this community project further, allocating funds to purchasing new sewing machines and developing the framework for a sewing cooperative.
In partnership and sponsorship by Blessington Singer Co Australia, in 2015 we will provide 10 X 4411 Heavy Duty Singer sewing machines to women across 4 villages and commence establishing a local Luro district sewing cooperative.
Blessington Singer Co Australia have undertaken a commitment to this project over the next 4 years, supplying 10 X 4411 Heavy Duty Singer sewing machines each year at wholesale price, giving us an ability to integrate 40 new 4411 Heavy Duty Singer sewing machines into the Luro district.
This project is about improving the economic welfare of the women in the Luro district through micro business establishment and vocational skills development.
