PRESIDENT A founding member of the Friends of Luro, Mary’s interest in community development and friendship with Timor Leste spans more than a decade. She has visited numerous times and represented the UN, supervising the polling booths in Luro during the 1st Timor independent elections. Her valuable insight based on past experiences in PNG has tempered her outlook on Luro possibilities.
PROJECT FACILITATOR As fellow founder of Friends of Luro, George has an energy and passion for Timor Leste that is infectious. Riding the tour de Timor, Rotary delegations and many trips to Luro provides George with relationships and friendships that open doors. As CEO of Weston & Weston, George has strong practical and entrepreneurial skills that will be used in logistics and expedition management.
In memory of Reece Tehan
Reece was an original member of Friends of Luro Leeton, Reece visited Timor Leste more than 12 times. As a UN observer during the elections for independence, he had a deep understanding of the community of Luro and built loyal and trusting relationships with the community. Reece was the founder of many community development ideas, including the water filter project which provided over 800 households with fresh clean drinking water. He will be deeply missed.
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR Employed from the beginning of the Friends of Luro friendship between Leeton and Luro, Helena speaks English and Tetum and is a valuable translator and a key coordinator, organiser and negotiator. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT OFFICER Deo is our “can do” Community Development Officer based in Luro and is also engaged to help facilitate community development projects in Luro. Deo’s English is self taught and his aptitude for languages makes him a valued team member.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Timor-Leste to Australia Abel was the founding father of Timor and Australian Local Government Friendship Agreements and remains a strong advocate for the Friends of Luro. Abel’s many diplomatic roles include Timor-Leste’s first Consul General to Australia; acting as Chief of Staff for then Prime Minister H.E. Dr. Jose Ramos-Horta in 2007; Director for Bilateral Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
TREASURER / SECRETARY Treasurer of FoL, Eric has been instrumental in raising thousands of dollars towards Luro scholarships. As former school principal Eric is passionate about education for the students of Luro – Timor Leste. He has visited Luro three times over 13 years and has seen first hand the progress made over time.
TIMOR TREKKING PROGRAM COORDINATOR Katrina has a background in community development and outdoor expeditions. Formally a leader with Outward Bound Australia, she understands group dynamics and has successfully led adult and school groups on 10 days adventures in isolated conditions. As an avid international traveler Katrina sees the enormous potential in connecting cultural tourism with Timor Leste in a managed and positive way. She is one of the founders of Timor Trekking.
TIMOR TREKKING PROGRAM COORDINATOR Gen’s experience in photography and community development in developing countries provides us with the graphic and pictorial talent needed to capture the adventure and images unique to Timor Leste. Gen is coordinating our website, the media and promotion for expeditions and will be the tour photographer documenting moments of amazement.
MAJOR SPONSOR - Charity Golf Day As a member of ‘Life Love and Health Inc.’, Dan created a link with Leeton Council to start ‘Friends of Luro’ in Leeton. Since then, Dan has been the major sponsor for the Charity Golf Day since its inception in 2006.
COMMITTEE MEMBER Greg is a strong advocate and willing volunteer with the Friends of Luro. Having visited Luro many times, Greg’s skills as a carpenter and tradesman were valued throughout the “water filter bucket” project. Greg has been to Timor a number of times to help facilitate projects in Luro.
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT - GOVT Delphim plays an integral role in the Luro community as the Government appointed Community Development Officer. Spending 3 months in Leeton learning about life, community development and farming technologies in Australia, Delphim speaks good English and is a valuable interpreter.

Rob Williams, Adviser for Research, was awarded the honor for his service overseas to humanitarian projects, particularly through Seeds of Life in Timor-Leste. Rob has led research work with SoL(since 2004 Rob, an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at UWA has dedicated himself to the agricultural development of Timor-Leste for the past 10 years and is currently working for the Center for Legumes in Mediterranean Agriculture (CLIMA) at The University of Western Australia as the Research Adviser.
Dr Catharina Willimas
CULTURAL ADVISER Catharina has lived in Timor Leste since 2002 and provides valuable insight into the culture of Timor. She has been involved with FOL since its inception and her advice on all matters regarding Timorese rural communities is highly valued. Catharina is fluent in Tetun and has authored and co-authored publications for the Timor Leste Peace Corp, developed an interactive Tetun/English Dictionary and contributed to University Course Curriculums in Tetun.

FUNDRAISING FACILITATOR Lisa has been instrumental in promoting FoL throughout the Yanco Agricultural school community. Her ability to mobilize students has been a valuable asset to the team.

Yanco Agricultural High School has played a critical part in raising funds and promoting support for Luro Students. Both Lisa O'Brien & Colin Brown (YAHS Teachers) were instrumental in establishing scholarships to the Don Bosco Agricultural High School at Fuiloro Their commitment continues in raising funds through charity events and volunteering on behalf of FOL.
MAYOR - LEETON SHIRE COUNCIL As the Mayor of Leeton Shire, Paul was a catalyst in adopting and fostering the Friendship Agreement between the Leeton Shire Council and the Luro Sub District Administration. Paul traveled to Luro in 2010 for the signing of the agreement and maintains a strong advocate for the Friends of Luro volunteers.
