Friends of Luro is a non for profit Australian, volunteer community group. We work closely with remote rural communities in Timor Leste  to create positive change. We develop pilot projects and raise funds through community initiatives and volunteer at a grassroots level to ensure donations go directly to families and individuals in need. Our projects are within the Lautem District (Luro Sub District) encompassing the communities of Baricafa, Afabubu, Wairoque, Cotamutu, Lacawa and Luro. We volunteer with no religious or political agenda.

to 1 of the worlds

For Friends of Luro, community tourism is not merely tourism that benefits the Luro Sub District, but tourism where a part of the product is owned by the Community.

We believe that Community tourism should be community lead, in partnership with philanthropic organisations. The partnership should generate sustainable improvements for local communities through the development of their own enterprises.

This means that not only do benefits (including income) flow directly to the community from our Tours, but the Community learns to make decisions and organise the tour.

The BIG question is ............Whether you are going to be able to say a hearty YES to our adventure !!

introduce Yourself

tick off your bucket list... come with Us

All you need to bring is a sense of  cultural curiosity !

From the bustle of Timor’s capital Dili, to the rural charm of Luro, be mesmerized by the people and seduced by the landscapes of this beautiful region, whilst contributing to sustainable, community development.

Our trips offer travellers the opportunity to participate in a fantastic small group adventure that includes breathtaking scenery, dramatic coastlines and mouthwatering cuisine. We give you the chance to meet a variety of local people and have the time to really interact and learn something of their views on their country and the lives of their people whilst being a guest in their homes.

Friends of Luro believes that our Homestay & Trekking tours should be as rewarding for the host community of Luro as it is for You. We aim to maximise the benefits through employment of local staff and using local suppliers and businesses. We aim to ensure  that tourism does not divert resources away from local communities, but provides opportunities for cultural exchange, where You and the locals can share and learn from each other in an environment of mutual respect.
